SparkFun Qwiic PIR Breakout Boards

SparkFun Qwiic PIR Breakout Boards are equipped with EKM-series PIR sensors from Panasonic® paired with an ATTiny84 to interact using I²C with the Qwiic system. The Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors are great for detecting motion in a small area around the sensor. These EKMB-series PIR sensors are optimized for small movements to offer motion-sensing options for battery-powered applications due to the very low standby current consumption. The PIR sensors on these breakouts output a digital signal whenever a moving object is detected in the sensing area. That signal can be monitored by a microcontroller to trigger action on a connected device. These sensors offer digital output across 32 zones at a 5m detection distance with a 90° x 90° detection area.

The Qwiic PIR breakout boards accommodate two Qwiic connectors and two 3 headers on the back of the board for reprogramming the ATTiny84. The low-profile PIR motion sensors from Panasonic with 10.9mm versus standard 14.4mm height offer space savings for constrained designs. These sensors consist of a lens to create various detection zones, an optical filter to block non-infrared light, and pyroelectric sensing elements. Additionally, electromagnetic shielding to all circuitry and an impedance converter to get an electrical signal are also among the application usages. Typical applications include home and building automation for energy saving, automated on/off lighting control, security, appliances, and IoT.
