RECOM Power offers a wide range of DC-DC converters suitable for automotive environments. DC-DC converters used in automotive applications must meet AEC-Q specifications for stress testing, performance, and production process control, establishing the reliability of the parts in their end applications. For the molded DC-DCs that integrate all components, including magnetics, the appropriate standard is AEC-Q100, intended for integrated circuits. These parts are also required to have a quality system that is compliant with ISO/TS 16949, including a Product Part Approval Process (PPAP), ensuring the continuing quality of manufactured parts.
AEC-Q standards are at the base level, and automotive users can also require compliance with their own internal specifications, such as the common need that solder joints of modules be inspectable by automated optical equipment. Some recent RECOM Power products utilize 3D Power Packaging technology, which includes grid array terminations that require X-ray techniques for inspection. RECOM offers wettable flanks to automotive-qualified DC-DC converters in a QFN package, allowing solder to flow up metallization on the package edges so a good solder joint is verifiable.
