Littelfuse offers protection components for battery fuel gauge ICs. Battery Fuel Gauge ICs are critical components to the battery management system within battery-operated electronics, including drones, medical equipment, small appliances, and mobile and wearable devices. Fuel gauge ICs monitor the battery state-of-charge, sending the data to power management ICs in order to provide optimal battery life, longevity, and overall system performance. Protecting the fuel gauge ICs is important due to the increase of available voltage in batteries up to 20V for USB-C. Sustained overvoltage, ESD, overcurrent faults, and overheating are all hazards that could damage the battery management system if proper protection is not used.
Designers traditionally use a resistor and ESD protector pair to protect the I2C communication lines of a Battery Fuel Gauge IC. The increased use of the USB-C causes an increased risk due to sustained overvoltage events. The Littelfuse zeptoSMDC can prevent the ESD protector from failing during sustained overvoltage event when used in place of the traditional resistor.
